Uruguay is emerging as one of South America’s favorite destinations. Its capital Montevideo has a warm, temperate climate, pleasant sea breezes and miles of boulevards. From Montevideo’s Telecommunications Tower you can see the hill that gave the city its name. Another tower, the Palacio Salvo looms high above the Plaza Independencia in the City Center. Under this square is the mausoleum for the country’s revolutionary hero José Artigas. Nearby Plaza Matriz is the city’s oldest square and home to the 18th-century Metropolitan Cathedral, the focal point of Uruguay’s Old Town. Soccer is big here and in 1930 Uruguay hosted and won the first-ever FIFA World Cup in the Estadio Centenario. Another proud local tradition is “parrilla" and the best way to try it is to buy cuts of meat in the Mercado del Puerto, and have those cooked for you on the spot. The 19-mile long promenade, La Rambla leads to the city’s favorite playground: De Los Pocitos Beach. To the west along the river is the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Colonia del Sacramento, with its landmark lighthouse, sleepy Plaza de Armas, historic Portón de Campo and atmospheric Street of Sighs. To the east of Montevideo, if you follow the coast, is Piriápolis. This beach resort offers great views from its hilltop San Antonio Temple. The next highlight on this road trip is the lighthouse of La Paloma on the Cabo de Santa María peninsula. On your way to the lighthouse of Punta del Este, don’t miss eccentric Casapueblo, a wonderful hotel and art gallery designed by local artist Carlos Páez Vilaró in Punta Ballena. Uruguay may be small, but its big heart and relaxing vibe create a lifetime of memories. https://www.expedia.com/Montevideo.d2461.Destination-Travel-Guides -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on social media: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Expedia Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/expedia Instagram: http://instagram.com/expedia Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/Expedia/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+Expedia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on our travel blog, Viewfinder: http://viewfinder.expedia.com/

Anyway you can also do it on your own! The tourism office next to the town hall provides free maps with all POI and all sights are in walking distance close to each other. 2) City from above At the tourism office you’re also able to get a free ticket for the terrace at the top of the town hall. Take the elevator and enjoy a great view over Montevideo! 3) Discover the architecture on a walk You can find an interesting mix of architectural styles in Montevideo – discover them by walking around the innercity, where you’ll also stumble upon nice pieces of Streetart. 4) La Rambla de Montevideo One of the best things about this city is the promenade along the river. You can find some nice spots along the 22km long “Rambla” to relax or for doing some workout.5 5) Chivito Food should alway be part of a travel experience. Apart from BBQ/Asado like in the other countries around you can find a sandwich called “Chivito” – it’s the Deal in Uruguay and -of course- it comes with meat ;) Check out my Blog for more free tips about Uruguay and South America! The Mercado Agrícola de Montevideo (Agricultural Market of Montevideo) is one of Montevideo’s must-see attractions. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of this bustling food market. Sample everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to craft beer and Uruguay’s famous steaks. Afterwards, browse for plants, flowers and locally-made handicrafts. In 2013 the market celebrated its centennial year. Spread throughout the market is a collection of over 100 stalls and vendors. Find colorful displays of fruits and vegetables, artisanal cheeses and cured meats, fresh fish and natural products. Browse the gift shops for kitchenware and design goods, local handicrafts, jewelry and books. Be sure to arrive with an appetite because you’ll find several restaurants and fast food stands. Sip on craft beers or yerba mate, which is a tea commonly drunk in South America. Feast on freshly-cooked paella and tender cuts of Uruguayan beef. Sample Uruguay’s national dish, the chivito, a sandwich of thinly-sliced grilled beef topped with salad and numerous garnishes. Besides the food, the market is also a popular location for cultural events. Enjoy live music and dance performances. Watch science demonstrations and take part in gastronomy workshops. There are activities designed specifically for children, too. Don’t miss the Museo de Máquinas (Machine Museum), located in the market’s basement. Find displays of the machines that were previously used to cool the market. Take time to admire the market’s architecture, characterized by its colorful arched entrance, towers and tall windows. It is especially impressive at night when it is illuminated and lights up the surrounding streets. The Mercado Agrícola de Montevideo is a short 10-minute drive north of downtown Montevideo. Several public buses provide easy access. The market is in a less desirable area of the city so it’s advisable to take a taxi if visiting after dark. While here you might want to visit the nearby Palacio Legislativo (The Legislative Palace). It’s one of Montevideo’s most architecturally-impressive buildings.

Travel to the land that time forgot and set out on the journey of a lifetime in Patagonia, where Mother Nature runs the show. Patagonia, the fabled ‘edge of the world’, spans the southernmost regions of Chile and Argentina and can be rugged and desolate as well as breathtakingly beautiful and inviting. This last frontier of South America is a colorful mosaic of snow-capped mountains, icebergs, volcanoes, glaciers, forests, lakes and vast steppe plains. On the Argentinean side, the scenic Road of the 7 Lakes takes you from San Martín de los Andes to Villa La Angostura and finally San Carlos de Bariloche, a popular ski resort on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi. El Chaltén, in the southern Andes, is Argentina’s trekking capital. Trails lead to Laguna Capri, Fitz Roy Mountain and the fearsome Cerro Torre. El Calafate is nestled the southern shores of Lago Argentino and is the gateway lake to Los Glaciares National Park. Here, one of the world’s most awe-inspiring glaciers awaits: the Perito Moreno Glacier. In the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, take the 'End of the World Train’ to Tierra del Fuego National Park or get there by boat over the Beagle Channel. Photo opportunities along the way include Bird Island, Seal Island and the historic Les Éclaireurs lighthouse. On the Chilean side of Patagonia, the regional capital Punta Arenas attracts visitors with its colonial architecture, cultural attractions and hospitality. Tour the region’s Milodón Cave, where the remains of a giant ground-dwelling sloth and other huge extinct species were found. Torres del Paine National Park is great for horse riding or hiking, with its steppes, snowcapped peaks, brimming lakes and Salto Grande waterfalls. On the northern border of Chilean Patagonia, in the Los Lagos region, looms the mighty Osorno Volcano. The town of Puerto Varas, on the opposite shores of Lake Llanquihue, marks the end your Patagonia expedition. https://www.expedia.com/Patagonia-Region.d6053659.Destination-Travel-Guides -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on social media: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Expedia Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/expedia Instagram: http://instagram.com/expedia Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/Expedia/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+Expedia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on our travel blog, Viewfinder: http://viewfinder.expedia.com/

http://www.expedia.com/Buenos-Aires.d178242.Destination-Travel-Guides Named for good sailing winds, Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina, and home to nearly a quarter of the country’s two million residents. Come for the stunning European architecture, and stay for delicious cuts of meat, the city’s zest for soccer, and, of course, the tango. “The Paris of South America” boasts outstanding shopping and a friendly populace. A tour of Buenos Aires should cut through La Boca Harbor, where you’ll find numerous street vendors, restaurants, and street dancers willing to give you a spin. Wander down the streets to take in colorful artwork, and make a game out of asking the locals what neighborhood you should tour next. Here’s a hint: with so much to see, everyone will give you a different answer! Some will tell you to visit San Telmo for souvenirs, patio shopping, and crumbling historical buildings. Others will suggest Puerto Madero, a refurbished shipping port that boasts a mixture of old-world glamour and modern buildings. What everyone will suggest, however, is a stop by Plaza de Mayo. There you can take in the rosy architecture of the Casa Rosada, which was made famous by Argentine First Lady Eva Peron and the musical about her life, “Evita.” Take a tour and learn about her life, from her humble beginnings to her rise to power. Cap off your Buenos Aires sightseeing with an evening walk through Puerto Madero, where you can get a late dinner and dance until the next day arrives. What do you want to see in Buenos Aires? Visit our Buenos Aires travel guide page for more information or to plan your next vacation! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on social media: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Expedia Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/expedia Instagram: http://instagram.com/expedia Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/Expedia/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+Expedia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on our travel blog, Viewfinder: http://viewfinder.expedia.com/
