Soccer is big here and in 1930 Uruguay hosted and won the first-ever FIFA World Cup in the Estadio Centenario. Another proud local tradition is “parrilla" and the best way to try it is to buy cuts of meat in the Mercado del Puerto, and have those cooked for you on the spot. The 19-mile long promenade, La Rambla leads to the city’s favorite playground: De Los Pocitos Beach. To the west along the river is the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Colonia del Sacramento, with its landmark lighthouse, sleepy Plaza de Armas, historic Portón de Campo and atmospheric Street of Sighs. To the east of Montevideo, if you follow the coast, is Piriápolis. This beach resort offers great views from its hilltop San Antonio Temple. The next highlight on this road trip is the lighthouse of La Paloma on the Cabo de Santa María peninsula. On your way to the lighthouse of Punta del Este, don’t miss eccentric Casapueblo, a wonderful hotel and art gallery designed by local artist Carlos Páez Vilaró in Punta Ballena. Uruguay may be small, but its big heart and relaxing vibe create a lifetime of memories. https://www.expedia.com/Montevideo.d2461.Destination-Travel-Guides -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on social media: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Expedia Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/expedia Instagram: http://instagram.com/expedia Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/Expedia/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+Expedia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on our travel blog, Viewfinder: http://viewfinder.expedia.com/

With these 5 budget friendly things to do in Montevideo you are able to see the main sights of the capital of Uruguay on the cheap. Anyway you can also do it on your own! The tourism office next to the town hall provides free maps with all POI and all sights are in walking distance close to each other. 2) City from above At the tourism office you’re also able to get a free ticket for the terrace at the top of the town hall. Take the elevator and enjoy a great view over Montevideo! 3) Discover the architecture on a walk You can find an interesting mix of architectural styles in Montevideo – discover them by walking around the innercity, where you’ll also stumble upon nice pieces of Streetart. 4) La Rambla de Montevideo One of the best things about this city is the promenade along the river. You can find some nice spots along the 22km long “Rambla” to relax or for doing some workout.5 5) Chivito Food should alway be part of a travel experience. Apart from BBQ/Asado like in the other countries around you can find a sandwich called “Chivito” – it’s the Deal in Uruguay and -of course- it comes with meat ;) Check out my Blog for more free tips about Uruguay and South America! http://www.sightseer.tv/buenos-aires/getting-around Uruguay is just across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires and well worth a visit. Many people visit Uruguay to enjoy its beautiful coastline, as well as it's cities and towns like Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento. So how do you get to Montevideo, Uruguay from Buenos Aires, Argentina? Here's how: One of the most popular ways is by Ferry. Buquebus is one of the main ferry operators between Argentina and Uruguay. The company operates daily crossings from Buenos Aires to both Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento on the Uruguayan side. Buquebus also offers bus services to other places along the Uruguayan coast. These include coastal towns like Punta del Este, Piriapolis and La Padrera. The main Buquebus ferry terminal in Buenos Aires can be found next to the port area of Puerto Madero. Within the main terminal building is a ticket office. You can purchase tickets here or online through the Buquebus website. Ferries run throughout the day and the company also run day trips and excursions to Uruguay. If you have time on your hands, you could travel 1 hour north of Buenos Aires to Tigre. Here you can catch a ferry to Carmelo in Uruguay. This crossing takes a scenic route past the Tigre Delta. Another way to get to Uruguay is by coach. To do this you need to go to the main long haul coach terminal in Buenos Aires called Retiro. The journey from Buenos Aires to Montevideo takes approximately 8 hours by bus. Most buses depart late at night arriving early morning in Uruguay. Taking the bus can work out cheaper and can helps avoid delays if bad weather is effecting the ferry crossings. Finally, a very quick option but usually more expensive, is to fly. There are regular flights from Buenos Aires to Montevideo. Most flights depart and arrive from Jorge Newberry Airport in Buenos Aires. Other flights go from the main international airport of Ezeiza. Whichever way you cross from Argentina to Uruguay, or visa versa, you are bound to enjoy your time in both.

Montevideo Vacation Travel Guide Uruguay is emerging as one of South America’s favorite destinations. Its capital Montevideo has a warm, temperate climate, pleasant sea breezes and miles of boulevards. From Montevideo’s Telecommunications Tower you can see the hill that gave the city its name. Another tower, the Palacio Salvo looms high above the Plaza Independencia in the City Center. Under this square is the mausoleum for the country’s revolutionary hero José Artigas. Nearby Plaza Matriz is the city’s oldest square and home to the 18th-century Metropolitan Cathedral, the focal point of Uruguay’s Old Town.
